FAQ - Look Before you leak
What options do I have when it comes to re-roofing?
You can completely replace your roof or re-cover your existing roof. These options varying cost and time. In most cases, removing the existing roof, replacing any bad wood, installing new felt (tar) paper and re-roofing is your best choice. A re-cover can be a good alternative if cost or other considerations are prevalent. Generally overlaying (re-cover) an existing shingle roof with a second shingle roof is NOT a quality roofing practice. To be sure which is right for you, one of our roofing specialist would be happy to discuss the differences with you.
Is replacing my leaking roof the only option I have?
Not necessarily. There may be only a portion of your roof that needs to be repaired. To be certain it would be advised to take advantage of our free estimate and consultation. Call today to make an appointment.
I have received a few estimates and there is a wide range of prices. Why is that?
Be wary of the lowest estimate. If it sounds too good to be true, it probably is. Many fly-by-night contractors' estimates seem attractive, but these contractors often are uninsured and perform substandard work. Take time to look at our suggested; Top 10 things to ask before chooing a roofer.
How often should I clean my gutters?
Gutters should be cleaned at least once in the summer and twice in the fall.
Can heavy snow damage my roof?
Yes! It is important to keep heavy snow off your eavestrough and cleared out of your ridge vents.
What is an ice dam?
Ice dams form when warmth from inside the home melts the bottom layer of snow on the roof, sending water trickling down to the edge. Exposed to frigid air, it immediately refreezes, clogging gutters and causing the water behind it to pool up and find a path into the home below, usually through the shingles. Ice dams are more common in older or poorly insulated homes and those with low-pitch roofs. But even in newer homes, a new roof can leak if water runs backward in between the shingles.
Why is ventilation important?
Ventilation is a crucial factor in the life of a roofing shingle. Heat build-up in the hot summer months, as well as the cold weather of winter will accelerate the aging process of your asphalt roofing shingles. Proper air circulation, regardless of the weather outside, will greatly reduce the chances of leaking, blistering, distortion, curling, rotting of wood structure, wet insulation and many other potential problems.
It is also important to note that adequate ventilation is required to validate the shingles manufacturer warranty. In Canada for example, minimum requirements prescribed in the National Building Code must be respected. In all cases, the most stringent applicable building codes must be followed.
Why do different shingle types carry different warranties?
In today's market, there are many types and styles of shingles available. The various types of shingles come with warranties representative of the life expectancy of each type.
Generally speaking the heavier the shingle, the longer the warranty. All other things being equal, the weight difference comes from the amount of waterproofing material (asphalt) used during manufacture.
